Cookie Heaven!
I have baked Sour Cream Cookies with my mom and sister for as long as I can remember. The recipe came from my Aunt Cheryl, who is a bottomless well of recipes and family cooking traditions, and this recipe has become a main staple in any household where my family gathers. I realized recently that I hadn’t baked Sour Cream Cookies for months, so needless to say, I headed to the store for supplies and began baking as soon as I got home. Well for the last 3 weeks, I have been baking Sour Cream Cookies non-stop. What can I say…inspiration hits me in a big way sometimes. I found myself experimenting with different versions, like adding blackberry preserves or fresh lemon zest. I even have a friend who is making homemade nectarine jam to pair with my cookies. Every version was wonderful, but the original is still the best, and without exception, everyone who tries them is in love instantly. I tested this by walking around my workplace and shoving a cookie in everyone’s mouth as soon as I saw them.
Stars collided, fireworks exploded and bells were ringing out in the air as everyone’s look of surprise turned into that look that only Sour Cream Cookies can create-pure cookie love. I know you are thinking I am a little crazy about these cookies, but wait until you too are converted. Your first taste of this moist rich cake-like cookie dusted with just enough powdered sugar to elevate the sweetness to the perfect level, will take you to cookie heaven! If you are skeptical, try them for yourself. The original recipe is below. Share them with your friends and family, but be warned…you may be asked to cook them all the time, so be prepared for cookie devotees hounding you to get in the kitchen and bake! I hope you love them as much as I do (even 1/2 as much would be a lot!) Happy eating…
Ingredients:
1 stick of butter
1 egg
1 cup of sugar
2 tsp pure vanilla extract (don’t use imitation!)
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup sour cream
2 ¼ cup flour
Cream the butter, sugar and egg until smooth (you can use beaters but I like to mix by hand so I don’t overwork the cookie dough). Add the sour cream, vanilla, baking soda and baking powder. Stir until blended. Then slowly add your flour (about ¼ to ½ cup at a time).
In a separate bowl put about a cup of powdered sugar. Using a spoon, drop some cookie dough into the powdered sugar, then pick-up and roll in between your hands, forming 1 inch balls. Space them out on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for about 8-10 minutes (I go with 8 minutes so the cookies are as moist and rich as possible.)
That’s it! Your cookies are done. Wasn’t that easy? Now go spread the cookie gospel!

Theses look great. I’ll have to try them in the upcoming weeks. But are some of them in the picture green
If so what causes that? Either way I have had variations of this cookie before but they have never been cake-like. So needless to say I’m intrigued.
Those are actually purple (doesn’t read on camera well)…they are the ones where I added blackberry preserves….delicious! They smelled like blackberry perfume. You could add all kinds of preserves or citrus zest. Strawberry is going to be my next experiment.
